Hercinia comes from the name of a Germanic firebird, not unlike the phoenix, whose glowing feathers light the path ahead for travellers.
The Hercinia Arts Collective was established as an offshoot of Toronto Aerial Dance by core members who suddenly realized their own big ideas were trying to take over and would soon require a little more space to breathe.
These big ideas centred around creating a space and a company that could operate on a truly collaborative basis; where core members' strengths in aerial, dance, acro and theatre could be complimented by a number of contributing artists from diverse fields. By creating an open door environment to encourage a continuous dialogue between artists, our company's work aims to challenge all those involved to think outside the box.
In short, our goal is to constantly push the boundaries between traditional art forms to create work that cannot necessarily be classified as a specific genre, and to use this fusion to express the otherwise inexpressible to the widest possible audience.
